The National Medical Commission has issued an important advisory for Indian students planning to pursue MBBS abroad. In its latest public notice dated 26 November 2024, the Under Graduate Medical Education Board (UGMEB) emphasized that Indian students seeking admission to foreign medical universities must ensure that the institutions comply with the guidelines set by NMC, as outlined in the Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiates (FMGL) Regulations, 2021.
The advisory follows ongoing concerns about the rising number of Indian students enrolling in foreign medical universities that do not adhere to the regulatory standards mandated by the NMC. Despite earlier advisories, the NMC has noticed that various institutions abroad continue to offer medical courses with curriculum, training, and internship structures that do not align with the NMC guidelines, which severely affects the student's potential to practice medicine in India.
As per the latest FMGL regulations, key conditions shall be met for Indian students to be eligible for registration and practice medicine in India. These conditions must include the duration of the medical program, medium of instruction, syllabus content, and clinical training or internships. Any deviation from these guidelines may result in disqualification for registration under the National Medical Commission, making the candidate ineligible to practice in India.
Furthermore, the NMC also stresses that students ensure that foreign medical universities they wish to be admitted into must fulfill all the conditions in the FMGL regulations before taking admission. The advisory is part of ongoing efforts to safeguard the quality and standards of medical education for Indian students and ensure that foreign degrees are in line with India's medical practice regulations.
The notification aims to prevent any complications for students who are determined to practice medicine in India after obtaining their medical qualifications from foreign universities.
